Department of Chemistry

About Department of Chemistry

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Chemistry under the School of Sciences and Technology. Earlier a service department, now this new department has come into independent existence from 2014, offering UG, PG & Research programmes namely: B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D. The course curricula of each programme have been designed with emphasis on industry relevance. Our department is fully conscious about the fact that chemistry plays an important role in the development of science, engineering and technology. In our department students from undergraduate as well as postgraduate streams are deeply engaged in learning and we connect them to opportunities in employment and education. The department helps students to develop their technical knowledge, skill and ability; motivating them to think creatively, helping them to act independently

Programme Overview

The programmes in our department our aimed at providing a comprehensive analysis of different domains of chemistry in order to build a logical approach in the students to provide them with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to take on leadership roles in industry and academia.

Assessment and Evaluation

Continuous evaluation is the focus for the assessment of students and evaluation is done for every theory and practical (where applicable) course. This is achieved through quizzes, assignments, presentations, projects, mid-semester test and final semester test for each student. As per UGC guidelines 75% attendance in lecture classes in every course is must for appearing in the final semester test. As per academic regulations of IIU, the following marks will be awarded for attendance:95% and above: 10Marks, 90-94%: 8Marks, 85-89%: 6Marks, 80-84%: 4Marks and 75-79%: 2Marks. The student’s performance in each theory course is evaluated for a maximum of 100 Marks of which 30 marks are for in-semester assessment, 10 marks for attendance and 60 marks are for the mid and end semester examinations. Absolute marks are awarded for all tests, quizzes, assignments and laboratory work evaluations. Based on the performance of a student, each student is awarded a letter grade in each subject at the end of semester. The following letter grades are broad indicators of the UG grading policy, for the accumulated weighted marks for a particular course, in an entire semester.

Cumulative marks Letter grade Grade points
85-100 A 10
70-84 B 8
50-69 C 6
40-49 D 4
0-39 F 0

Letter grades A, B, C, D are pass grades and F grade is the fail grade. A student is declared pass only if he/she secures the minimum required grade points in each course.
